Strengthen the capacity of, and benefits gained by, local communities in their role in climate action and natural resource management.

Regional and local levels are extremely important to reach the objectives set by the Paris Agreement, but most of the levers are still controlled by national government and national operators. As a result, the climate action and innovation led by communities and local actors are rarely scaled up at the level they could. In order to come out of this impasse, communities are advocating for a new economic and legal framework that allows them to take control of their just transition.

The PR Climate Readiness Planning for Local Communities project aims to facilitate this framework through capacity building and technical support. Communities have identified the need for decentralized climate strategy that responds to their local needs. Through this project we seek to equip and scale communities initiatives in coherent and comprehensive Community Climate Plans. We will support, share, and elevate community-led projects that are advancing climate resiliency. Specifically, the Puerto Rico Climate Readiness Accelerator for Local Communities will provide participants the following offerings of support:

  • Regional knowledge-sharing and partnership opportunities (base and community building)

  • Informational briefings and resources to learn about federal funding opportunities

  • Technical support and capacity-building for development of Community Climate Plans

  • Capacity-building workshops for federal funding applications related to Justice40, infrastructure spending, and other available financial flows.
